Documentary study on banking in the DRC
The market research company Target Sarl has produced a documentary study on the banking landscape in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), edition 2023, to provide banking professionals and individuals with up-to-date and accurate information on the sector.
In addition to the editions published in 2017 and 2022, Target provides an even more detailed overview of the banking industry in the DRC, including data on market share, mapping of branches, cashiers and ATMs, pricing, banks' digital solutions, and account opening requirements.
The key findings of the study show that there are 453 bank branches and ATMs in the DRC, with almost half (42%) located in Kinshasa, followed by Haut-Katanga (14%), Congo-Central (10%) and North Kivu (7%). TMB (23%), Rawbank (21%), and EquityBCDC (17%)are the three banks with the most extensive networks.
As there are 14 commercial banks in the DRC, only 13 are introduced in this publication, as CRDB Bank PLC has not yet started all its operations in the DRC. Data on Advans Banque are also not included, following the new regulation of the Central Bank, which classifies it as a microfinance institution.
Regarding the ATM network, the study covers the cities of Lubumbashi, Goma, Matadi, and Boma, with almost 130 ATMs. The annex to the report provides information on the physical addresses of each bank throughout the country. It is important to note that the data described above is just a glimpse of the valuable information provided by the study.
It is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand the DRC banking sector in detail and develop effective strategies. To carry out this study, Target used the following three methods: Documentary research, interviews with key players in the banking sector, and mystery shopping to gather pricing information.
